Thai Classical Dance — Forms, Costumes and Meaning

Updated 2026 · Totally Bangkok

Khon (masked drama), Lakhon (court dance), and the stories they tell through gesture and movement.

Khon

Masked classical dance-drama depicting the Ramakien epic — elaborate headdresses and masks identify characters; traditionally performed at royal ceremonies and now at the National Theatre.

Lakhon Nai (inner court dance)

Refined female court dance with slow, precise gestures; every hand position and foot placement carries meaning — it can take years to learn a single gesture sequence.

Li-khe

A more popular, less refined form of musical theatre with comedy elements — performed at temple fairs and local festivals; louder, more accessible than Khon.

Where to see it

National Theatre (Sanam Luang), Jim Thompson House cultural shows, some upscale restaurants — check schedules as performances are not daily.
