Thais have very long formal names but use short single-syllable nicknames — understanding this makes introductions much less confusing.
Thai formal names are often Sanskrit or Pali origin and extremely long — 'Nopphadon Khongsawatkiat' is a typical example; nobody uses them in daily life.
Every Thai has a kingly 'nickname' (chue len) used in daily life — often a single syllable: Noi (small), Yai (big), Lek (little), Nong (younger), or something playful.
Always use their nickname unless in a formal context; Thais are informally addressed by nickname + Khun (Ms/Mr equivalent); 'Khun Noi' is polite and correct.
Many Thais working in tourist areas adopt an English nickname — 'Bank', 'Golf', 'Film', 'Ice' are common; this is for ease of communication, not Westernisation.
