100km west of Bangkok with the famous Bridge over River Kwai, waterfalls, and WWII history.
The Bridge (from the classic film), War Cemetery, Hellfire Pass museum, Erawan Waterfall — history buffs and nature lovers both find things to do.
Direct van from Bangkok (2 hours, 250 THB) or train (3 hours, 100 THB, slower but scenic); most tourists go via organized tour (1,500–2,500 THB).
Visit Bridge at sunrise/sunset (photogenic), explore War Cemetery (respectfully), hike to Erawan Waterfall (refreshing), bamboo rafting down river (touristy but fun).
Full day trip is tight (7 AM–7 PM); better as overnight; cool season (Nov–Feb) is best; avoid rainy season (May–Oct) — waterfalls get crowded.
