The BTS Skytrain is often the easiest way to cross central Bangkok without sitting in road traffic. This guide explains the Green Line, fares, Rabbit cards, useful interchanges and how to plan trips without getting caught by outdated advice.
The core BTS network most visitors use is the Green Line, split into the Sukhumvit Line and Silom Line. The Sukhumvit Line runs through major visitor areas such as Mo Chit, Ari, Victory Monument, Siam, Chit Lom, Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong and Thong Lo before continuing far beyond central Bangkok. The Silom Line runs through National Stadium/Siam, Sala Daeng, Chong Nonsi, Saphan Taksin and onward across the river.
Siam is the key interchange between the two Green Line branches. The network is much larger than the central tourist map suggests, so check the station code and terminal direction rather than assuming every train stops near your hotel.
BTS publishes station and train operating hours of approximately 06:00 to 24:00. Do not interpret midnight as a promise that you can arrive at any station at 23:59 and still make a long connection. Last-train timing varies by station, direction and interchange, so use the official BTS timetable or app when a late journey matters.
For nightlife, concerts and late flights, build in a buffer. Bangkok roads can remain busy after the rail network winds down, and a taxi ride that is quick at one hour may be much slower at another.
BTS fares are distance-based and have changed over time, which is why old travel articles often quote the wrong range. The official adult Rabbit fare matrix effective from 1 November 2025 shows different amounts by origin and destination, with longer Green Line journeys reaching higher bands than older central-only guides suggested. Use the official BTS route-and-fare calculator for the trip you are actually taking rather than planning around a single fixed fare range.
Single-journey tickets remain useful for occasional riders. If you are making many trips, a Rabbit card can reduce the friction of buying a ticket each time, but it is not automatically the cheapest choice for every visitor.
BTS states that issuing a new Rabbit card costs 120 baht and that this is an issuance fee rather than a refundable deposit. Stored value can be added from a minimum of 100 baht up to a maximum stored balance of 4,000 baht, subject to Rabbit’s current conditions. Stored value is deducted according to the published fare table.
The practical advantage is speed at the gates. The disadvantage for a short stay is the upfront card cost and the fact that Bangkok does not have one simple universal transit card covering every rail operator in exactly the same way. Do not assume a Rabbit card automatically replaces every MRT or airport-rail ticket.
For a single trip, identify the destination station, buy the required ticket or token from the station machines, then tap or insert it as directed at the gate. Station staff can help if you are unsure of the destination or machine. Keep your ticket or card accessible until you have exited at the other end.
With Rabbit, tap at the entry gate and again when leaving. If the gate refuses the card, use the staffed counter rather than repeatedly blocking the lane while trying different gates.
Siam is where the Sukhumvit and Silom lines meet and is one of the busiest stations in the city. Check the platform signs for both line and direction before boarding. During peak periods, walking a few extra metres to the correct carriage area is often easier than getting onto the first crowded train and trying to move through it.
If you are travelling between Sukhumvit and riverside areas, this interchange is common. For some trips, however, connecting to the MRT at Asok/Sukhumvit or Sala Daeng/Si Lom can be more direct.
Useful BTS–MRT connections include Asok BTS with Sukhumvit MRT, Sala Daeng BTS with Si Lom MRT, and Mo Chit BTS with Chatuchak Park MRT. These are separate station names because they belong to different systems, but pedestrian links and signs make the transfer manageable.
Allow extra time for walking between gates and buying or validating the ticket required by the next operator. A route that looks like one rail journey on a map may involve exiting one paid area and entering another.
Saphan Taksin on the Silom Line is the most useful BTS station for connecting with the Chao Phraya river around Sathorn Pier. It is a practical transfer for river boats and for sightseeing routes that combine rail with riverside attractions.
Do not confuse public or scheduled river services with private tour offers made by touts near piers. Confirm the boat and destination before paying, especially if you are simply trying to reach a well-known stop.
The BTS does not run directly into either Bangkok airport terminal. For Suvarnabhumi, many travellers combine the Airport Rail Link with other rail or road transport. For Don Mueang, the best option depends on your origin, luggage and current rail connections. Plan the airport leg as a separate journey rather than assuming “near a BTS station” means direct airport access.
For an important flight, leave margin for transfers, platform walks and the possibility that a road segment takes longer than expected.
Weekday commuting periods can be extremely busy around major interchanges and central stations. If your schedule is flexible, travelling outside the main morning and evening peaks is more comfortable, especially with children or luggage. Let passengers exit before boarding and move away from the doors once inside.
At Siam and Asok, the first train may be packed while the next is easier. A few minutes of patience can be more pleasant than forcing yourself into a carriage that is already full.
Lifts and accessible routes exist across much of the network, but station layouts differ and an entrance on one side of a road may be much easier than another. If step-free access is essential, check the specific station map before leaving rather than relying on a general claim that every entrance is identical.
With suitcases, avoid blocking escalators and gate lanes. Airport-size luggage is manageable outside the busiest periods, but a taxi can be more practical when your hotel is a long walk from the station or your group has several heavy bags.
Siam is the Green Line interchange and a major shopping hub. Asok connects Sukhumvit to the MRT. Phrom Phong and Thong Lo serve popular Sukhumvit dining and accommodation areas. Sala Daeng serves Silom and connects to the MRT. Saphan Taksin links to the river. Mo Chit is useful for Chatuchak and an MRT connection.
The best station is not necessarily the one with the most attractions. For accommodation, a station that gives you a short, comfortable walk to the hotel every day can matter more than being one stop closer to a landmark.
The biggest mistakes are using an old fare chart, assuming Rabbit works identically across every Bangkok rail operator, boarding in the wrong terminal direction, and underestimating how much walking an interchange adds. Another is choosing a hotel advertised as “near BTS” without checking the actual walking route in Bangkok heat.
Station codes, line colours and destination signs make the system easier once you pay attention to them. Screenshot the official route map for offline reference if you will be moving around all day.
Use BTS when the origin and destination are reasonably close to stations and road traffic is likely to be slow. Use a taxi or ride app when you have heavy luggage, several people travelling together, a destination far from rail, or a late trip after services wind down. Often the smartest Bangkok journey combines rail for the congested middle section with a short walk or road ride at one end.
