Bangkok has two major airports and both handle domestic travel. The key decision is not simply finding the cheapest fare: confirm the airport, baggage rules and ground-transfer cost before you book.
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is Thailand's main aviation hub and handles domestic as well as international services. Don Mueang (DMK) also has substantial domestic traffic and is commonly used by low-cost carriers. Never assume a domestic flight automatically means Don Mueang; the airport code on your ticket is the authority.
BKK and DMK are on different sides of Bangkok. A cheap ticket can become an expensive mistake if you travel to the wrong airport or build an unrealistic same-day connection between them. Check the code every time, including the return sector, because an itinerary can use different Bangkok airports in each direction.
Flying is especially useful for long north–south journeys such as Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Hat Yai or the southern islands reached via an airport transfer. Koh Samui also has direct air service, although its airline mix and pricing can differ from routes to mainland airports. Schedules change seasonally, so search your exact travel date rather than relying on an old route list.
Compare the final trip cost, not the headline fare. Low-cost tickets may charge separately for checked baggage, seat selection, meals and some changes. A full-service fare can become competitive once you add the extras you genuinely need. Read the fare conditions before payment, especially if your international luggage allowance is much larger than the domestic allowance.
Weigh bags before leaving the hotel and buy checked baggage in advance when that is cheaper under your airline's rules. Cabin-bag size and weight limits differ by carrier and fare. If you are connecting from a long-haul flight, do not assume the domestic airline will honour the international carrier's allowance unless the flights are genuinely ticketed and protected together.
With separate bookings, you normally carry the risk if the first flight is late and you miss the second. Allow time for immigration where relevant, baggage collection, terminal movement, re-checking and security. A cross-airport connection needs an even larger margin. If missing the onward flight would ruin the trip, an overnight in Bangkok can be safer than an aggressive self-transfer.
The Airport Rail Link is a useful option from central Bangkok and avoids road congestion on its rail segment. Taxis and app-based cars are practical with luggage or for groups. Leave extra time during peak traffic or heavy rain.
Don Mueang can be reached by road and rail connections, including the Red Line via Krung Thep Aphiwat/Bang Sue. Which route is best depends on your hotel location and baggage. Compare the total door-to-terminal journey rather than choosing transport based only on price.
For Phuket and many far-southern destinations, flying usually saves substantial time. For Chiang Mai, the overnight train can still be attractive if the rail journey itself is part of the experience and you value avoiding an airport day. For shorter destinations, road or rail may be simpler once airport check-in and transfers are counted.
There is no reliable universal 'best' number of weeks. Thai public holidays, school breaks, festivals and long weekends can tighten availability quickly, while quieter dates may stay flexible. Compare fares early once your dates are fixed, then re-check the total price with baggage and seat needs included.
Search tools are useful for comparing schedules, but booking directly with the operating airline can make changes, disruption and baggage questions easier to resolve. If you use an agent, understand who is responsible for rebooking when plans change.
Confirm BKK or DMK, terminal, check-in deadline, baggage allowance and transport plan. Keep your passport or accepted travel ID accessible and verify the live flight status with the airline. Domestic aviation is straightforward when those basics are checked before you leave the hotel.
Flying within Thailand is fast and often good value, but Bangkok's two-airport system rewards careful booking. Airport code, baggage and connection protection matter more than a tiny difference in headline fare.
