How Thai tourist SIM registration works, where to buy a SIM or eSIM, and what to compare before paying.
Thai prepaid SIMs are identity-registered. Foreign visitors should expect to present a valid passport when registering a physical tourist SIM, and eSIM activation can also involve identity verification. Do not buy an already-activated anonymous SIM from an unofficial seller; registration rules are specifically designed to tie the number to a verified user.
The major consumer choices travellers encounter are AIS and True-dtac. Coverage and speed vary by location and congestion, but all are widely used in Bangkok. For a normal city trip, package duration, data allowance, hotspot rules and ease of support usually matter more than chasing a universal "fastest network" claim.
BKK and DMK have official operator counters aimed at arriving travellers. The advantage is convenience: staff can register the SIM, install it and test data before you leave the airport. Airport tourist bundles can cost more than promotions available elsewhere, so compare the actual package rather than assuming the first board you see is the best value.
Official operator shops in major malls are a good choice if you want staff assistance without airport urgency. Authorised retailers also sell prepaid SIMs, but passport registration is still required. Keep the SIM packaging or a screenshot of your mobile number and package details until the trip ends.
If your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, an eSIM lets you add a Thai data plan without removing your home SIM. This is useful for keeping your usual number available for banking or messaging. Check whether your home carrier charges roaming when that line remains active, and set the Thai line as the mobile-data line if that is what you intend.
A carrier-locked phone may reject another provider's SIM or eSIM. Confirm the lock status before departure. Also check that the device supports the relevant mobile bands and, for eSIM, that the exact model and regional variant support eSIM activation.
Packages change constantly. Compare current validity, high-speed data allowance or fair-use policy, included local calls, hotspot/tethering conditions and whether the quoted price includes tax. "Unlimited" can still come with speed tiers or other conditions, so read the current package page.
AIS currently advises that tourist SIM users who continue beyond specified registration or activation periods may need to reconfirm identity, including passport verification. True-dtac likewise states that tourist SIMs must be registered to a valid passport and publishes limits and validity rules. These requirements can change, so follow the operator's current instructions rather than an old blog post.
Operators and NBTC rules can limit how many numbers are associated with one identity. True-dtac currently states a maximum of three tourist SIMs per person per brand. Groups should register each traveller's line correctly rather than putting a large bundle of numbers under one passport.
If your home number receives banking verification codes, do not discard or lose access to it casually. Dual-SIM phones can keep both lines active, but turn off data roaming on the home line unless you deliberately want to use it. Check which line is selected before making calls or sending SMS to avoid unexpected roaming charges.
Mobile data is especially useful in Bangkok for maps, translation, Grab, transit information and messaging. Download your hotel address and key maps offline as a backup. A working local data connection is useful, but it should not be your only copy of travel documents or emergency contacts.
Use the operator's official app, call centre or shop rather than giving passport images to an unknown social-media account. AIS publishes passport re-verification methods for foreign users, while True and dtac provide support through their official service channels. Take the phone, SIM and passport to an official shop if identity verification cannot be completed remotely.
For maximum convenience, use an official airport counter or operator eSIM and have service working before leaving arrivals. For better comparison shopping, use an official city shop. Whichever route you choose, register with your own passport, confirm the package validity and data conditions, and keep the operator's app or support details handy.
