Tipping in Bangkok — What's Expected and What's Generous

Updated 2026 · Totally Bangkok

Thailand doesn't have a strong tipping culture — but service workers appreciate it; here's how much and when.

Restaurants

Not mandatory; 10–15% appreciated at mid-range and upscale restaurants; round up the bill at casual spots; some add a service charge automatically (10%).

Massage and spa

50–100 THB per hour massage tip is standard at street stalls; 100–200 THB at spas; always given directly to the therapist, not at the counter.

Taxi and Grab

Not expected but rounding up (e.g. fare is 47 THB, give 50 THB) is common; Grab accepts cash tip addition in the app.

Tour guides

100–200 THB for a half-day tour guide; 300–500 THB for a full-day private guide — this is where tips genuinely make a difference.

Hotels

20–50 THB per bag for porters; 50–100 THB/day for housekeeping if the room is cleaned; not expected but always appreciated.
