Khlong Bangkok Noi — The Old Royal Canal

Updated 2026 · Totally Bangkok

A canal tour through one of Bangkok's oldest waterways — passing royal barges, temples, and wooden houses.

History

Bangkok Noi was once a royal canal used by the King to travel between palaces — you still pass the Royal Barge Museum and several significant temples.

What you'll see

Traditional wooden stilt houses, spirit shrines on the water, monks crossing by boat, children swimming — Bangkok as it was before roads dominated.

Tour operators

Tours depart from Tha Chang pier (near the Grand Palace) — 2-hour tours typically 1,500–2,500 THB per boat (up to 6–8 people); hire the boat, not a seat on a boat.

Best time

Morning (7–10 AM) for best light and activity; weekend mornings for more boat traffic and open shops along the canal.
