Overnight Trains from Bangkok

Updated 2026 · Totally Bangkok

Thailand's overnight train network offers a cheap, atmospheric way to reach Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, and the south.

Why take the train

An overnight train means you save a night's accommodation, arrive rested (if you sleep), and see Thailand's landscape at dawn — a genuinely enjoyable experience.

Chiang Mai (north)

13–14 hours on the overnight train from Hua Lamphong — leaves 6 PM, arrives 7 AM; sleeper berths 500–1,500 THB depending on class.

South to the islands

Trains to Surat Thani (for Koh Samui/Koh Phangan) depart evening, arrive early morning; combine with ferry.

Classes

2nd class air-con sleeper is the sweet spot — upper berth (cheaper, slightly more movement) or lower berth (more expensive, more space); 1st class has private cabins.

Booking

Book at Hua Lamphong station (old), Bang Sue Grand (new main station), or online at railway.co.th; book 2–4 weeks ahead for weekends and peak season.
