Bangkok's major international film festival opens today. The Bangkok International Film Festival 2026 (BKKIFF) runs from 13–27 September, with its opening centred on ICONSIAM and a city-wide programme of screenings and industry activity continuing across multiple Bangkok cinemas.
BKKIFF is useful to travellers for a simple reason: it is not locked inside one convention centre. The festival turns several central-Bangkok cinema districts into one programme, which makes it possible to build a film into a normal city day—but it also makes venue checking essential. A screening at ICONSIAM is a very different journey from a session at CentralWorld or Samyan Mitrtown.
The festival is also mixing public cinema with industry events, visiting filmmakers, a market and special programmes. That means some festival activity is designed for professionals rather than casual ticket buyers. Visitors should plan from the specific film/session listing, not assume that every event mentioned in festival publicity is a public ticketed screening.
The 2026 festival formally opens on Sunday 13 September at ICONSIAM on the Chao Phraya. Festival launch coverage and industry reporting identify 9 Temples to Heaven, directed by Sompot Chidgasornpongse, as the opening film.
The most useful visitor detail is in the official live schedule: it currently lists 9 Temples to Heaven at 8:30pm on 13 September in ICON CINECONIC Theatres 2, 5 and 6, with a runtime of 2 hours 20 minutes. That is a concrete cinema session; the separate opening ceremony and red-carpet activity should not be assumed to be general public access unless the festival explicitly says so.
If you are considering tonight's opening film, check the official schedule again before leaving your hotel and then confirm live seat/ticket availability through the festival or the cinema. Opening-night demand and access arrangements can move quickly.
The official Eventival catalogue currently shows 138 films across sections including International Competition, New Voices Competition, Multicolor, Canvas, Special Presentation, Bangkok Midnight, In the Flow, a Shōhei Imamura retrospective, Thai Classic, Opening Film, Classic and Closing Film.
At the August launch, organisers and Thai media described a programme of more than 150 films. Festival launch material lists participating cinemas including SF World Cinema at CentralWorld, Paragon Cineplex, ICON CINECONIC, House Samyan and Doc Club. Song Wat is also being used as a special festival hangout/activity area during part of the run.
Because Bangkok traffic can turn a short-looking map hop into a poor connection, avoid booking back-to-back films at different venues unless the official schedule leaves a generous transfer window.

Do not assume that every listed film is in English or that every non-English film automatically has English subtitles. BKKIFF describes it as a meeting point for filmmakers, distributors, investors and buyers; industry reporting says the 2026 market is built around business matching, project development and professional networking rather than a simple public exhibition hall.
For ordinary travellers, this matters mostly as context. If your goal is simply to watch films, focus on the public screening schedule. If you work in film, distribution, production, locations or financing, the market dates may be the more important part of the festival and registration/badge rules should be checked separately.

Choose the film first, then the neighbourhood. BKKIFF is spread across Bangkok, so the cleanest approach is to pick one or two sessions and build food, shopping or sightseeing around that cinema district rather than zig-zagging between venues.
For Siam/CentralWorld screenings, BTS is usually the safest default. For Samyan, MRT is straightforward. ICONSIAM is best treated as a riverside outing rather than squeezed into a tight cross-city transfer. September is also Bangkok's rainy season, so leave margin for sudden heavy rain even when rail does most of the journey.
For opening night specifically, arrive earlier than you would for an ordinary multiplex visit. ICONSIAM may have festival guests, event operations and heavier-than-normal cinema traffic.
